Thank you, Frank.  I did indeed have upper-case 'X' in the same column and
turning off auto-input is the answer to prevent my lower-case 'x' from being
changed.

Hmmm... should auto-input be case sensitive?  It's interesting to note that if I
have a mix of both 'x' and 'X' in the same column, and then turn on auto-input,
subsequent entries of 'x' still get converted to 'X'.  Even if 'x' is at the top
of the column or in the cell directly above where the new value is being
entered.  Given that behavior, I personally would like to see auto-input be case
sensitive, so perhaps this issue should remain open.
