(Sorry about the late reply, I had exams and didn't spend much time on the
Internet.)
OK. Try the diamond operator (U+22C4) in Nimbus Roman No9 L or Bitstream Vera
Sans. This is character is displayed as a space in these fonts for me. Using
FreeSerif (the font suggested by GNOME's character table) though, the diamond
operator displays fine.
I will attach a sample document shortly containing three lines, each consisting
of only a diamond operator. The first line's font is Nimbus Roman No9 L, the
second line uses Bitstream Vera Sans and the third uses FreeSerif.
