Found the problem. It was an error that resulted from TRYING to install
Microsoft Word 2001 from an outdated CD on WinXP with SP2 and Internet Explorer
6 (it had tried to install an obsolete version of IE before the installation,
which failed in the end). I could not install ANYTHING after this. I reverted
back to a system restore point from the day previous to the Word install attempt
and I've been able to install several things (including JRE and OpenOffice) just
fine since.
