2006 -------
Writer consistently froze when opening three specific documents that I had
previously created and successfully saved in .odt format. The CPU load went to
99% and no matter how long I waited, I never regained control of the program. I
always had to force the program to close. Numerous other documents of the same
basic type consistently opened without a hitch.

I use Gentoo Linux with a 2.6.15 kernel and a Gnome/Metacity desktop. The
problem occurred both with the binary and self-compiled versions of OpenOffice.

In each document I eventually traced the problem to a particular footnote; if
the footnote was removed, the file opened perfectly fine. It wasn't even the
footnote itself, just its location. Moving the same footnote to the line above
or below its current location also fixed the problem. Finally I noticed that
even with the footnote in its original location, the problem went away if I
saved the file in page layout. The very same file, saved in web layout, could
not be opened successfully.

I will attach a sample of one of the three files. The file is currently saved
in page layout. Open and save the file in web layout and you should see the
problem recur. The fifth footnote is the one that is causing the problem.
