This is an MS Excel compatibility issue.
In OO Calc, The MAX() function returns Err:502 when the cell list contains empty
values.
In MS excel the MAX() function returns 0.

I'd attach a simple spreadsheet as an example as recommended in the FAQ about
issue reporting, but I don't see how to do that from this issue submission form.
