Reproducing added comment in 51654 for people trying to get sound working (and
not looking for more general request of support of several multimedia format),
which could as well find this issue first:

For non-german speaking people, here is a summary of the actions in order to
get MM work under Linux (summary of the tutorial):

1. Get Java installed (for instance JRE).
2. Get JMF (http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/jmf/2.1.1/download.html).
3. Make the JMF archive executable:
chmod +x jmf-2_1_1e-linux-i586.bin
4. Make sure java is in your PATH.
5. Run the executable archive. This will unpack JMF in JMF-2.1.1e (adapt for
your version), and try to detect you hardware configuration. This **does not**

install JMF in the JRE directory, everything will be placed in JMF-2.1.1e.
6. Start OpenOffice.
7. Go to Tools|Options|OpenOffice.org|Java.
8. Check the check box to activates Java.
9. Wait for a few seconds. Available JVM will be presented.
10. Select one JVM.
11. Click on the "Classes path..." button.
12. With the dialog this buttons opens, add the path to JMF-2.1.1e.
That's it!

More codecs can be added afterwards, but this is the minimum to get the media
player working with OpenOffice gallery media.

May I suggest to provide more information in OpenOffice archive README file
and in Help? And, while Java and JMF are not fully configured, to deactivate
the Media player, or at least give a warning, as previous comment asked for?
This is simply unusable for standard users under Linux (OO 1.1.5 is still far
better for this, whatever OO folks may say). At least, this is not "out of the

box", depending on the distribution used.
