This is in reply to Mr.Franks reply on import of tab, space, comma delimated
files directly into spread sheet.

I am sorry, don't take in a wrong sense, i am just comparing the MSexcel vs
the calc. i run and needd to analyze, (physically see the graph to pick some
areas)a lot 1d graphs (two to three thousand a week) and my instrument
software gives me ascii tex file. the file has only two columns which
correspond to x and y axis. if i take this file to excel, it will directly
take me to the window whther it is tab, space, comma delimated and you select
the choices and then the data are dumped to two columns in excel. In calc it
takes to writer. it is not correct say "As the file open dialog is not
application specific how could it know what you want to do" Isn't the user
deciding which program is to be used for his/her analysis? The user decided to
use spread sheet to analyze the data. That is the reason, he/she opens the
spread sheet. If he/she is to use writer he/she will ask it to open in writer!
just do this excercise by taking a simple txt file to excel you will know the
difference. this is point one.

your argument to use the .csv filter to select file. i do not know whether
this can be called a bug or else but once you select the *.csv filter, the
file disappears from the file list box for selection, because the file is
neither a *.csv or *.txt. In addition, if you select *.* option (all files) it
goes into writer. this is a major irritating point. the user knows which
program to use. just check this out. More importantly, several applications,
including the one i use, give *.dat extension. hence, the user first has to
change the extension to csv and then only the calc is allowing me to open the
file by giving the same dialog box excel gives by default (by the first import
request, excel provides the dialog box). you have to take a sample txt file to
excel to know the difference. i am assuming as an user that i want to plot my
text file data into a graph using the calc. so here i know what data i have, i
know what program i have to use hence, an office suite cannot be more
intelligent in decision making (to decide) which appliation it should use!

hence it deserves a relook.

So I close this one as INVALID.
