i'd also like to add that the problem also occurs even if the 'automatic
filename extension' option is enabled and you specify a filename *.xls such as
file.xls. instead of appending an .ods file extension, it maintains the .xls as
its file extension (thus associating with MS Excel even if the file itself is
formatted as an opendocument spreadsheet)

open office could open the file but not if you specify Excel sheet file type as
filter in the open dialog (though the file appears in the filtered list).

i think the same problem persists if you use an Excel format and save with a
filename *.ods
