the extension is just a name and (nearly) all names are valid to begin with 
thus 
a character sequence making up a name of an extension is an acceptable name too 
so if you enter doc as extension it will be just a name for the file; it won't 
be a doc file unless you choose the filetype to be doc (from the filetype 
selection drop down menu). And that's why Adobe could open the file and Word 
could not: it was still a PDF file (as that's the filetype which gets chosen 
when you export to pdf). Maybe OOo can choose (/ask you) to change the filetype 
when you enter an extension of a matching different filetype. Otherwise this is 
a duplicate to issue 65190.
