By default we link against the system's freetype library which can be quite old.
Older versions of freetype marked this API as unstable and so often it wasn't
even compiled in by some distributions. So we should fall back to the older
embolden implementation depending on the system's freetype version. What should
be the cut-off point? Freetype version < 2.2?
