I believe the method you are following will not work.
$pwd
/home/username
$ls
file1
file2
$cvs co readlicense_oo
$ls
file1
file2
readlicense_oo
To do an update you should be the checkout dir in this case
/home/username/readlicense_oo
Doing it from /home/username is the wrong use-case.
