2006 -------
1. New Text Document
2. Insert > Header > Default
3. Insert > Fields > Page Number
4. Switch focus to body of document
5. Insert > Manual Break...
6. Use the following settings: Page Break, Style: Default, change page number to
259. Click OK.At this point, you should see the usual blank page 1, followed by
page 259.
7. File > Save As...; save the document as a Word 97/2000/XP document
8. Exit OOo.
9. Re-open OOo and open the document you just saved.

Page 259 has become page 3; if you use any number larger than 256 in step 6,
above, the page numbering will be offset from 256--for example, choosing 300
will result in the document starting at 44. (If you use a number smaller than
page 255, numbering will be correct for pages past 256.)

This problem also presents itself when using Format > Paragraph > Text Flow to
change the page numbering.

Unfortunately, I don't have Word around to test whether Word opens the file with
the correct page number.
