Based on the recommendation on the OpenOffice.org installation instructions that
say:
"Some distributions have strict policies around licensing, which means
they have chosen to disable parts of OpenOffice.org ..."
I removed my Fedora Core 5 native installation and replaced it with the official
OpenOffice.org version.
The missing Data Sources icon is now available!
Sorry for the noise.
By the way oobase was also disabled in the FC5 version.
