Looking a little closer, using Automatic does change the look of the style but
not the setting in drop-down list in Tools->Options. So, it only has "half" the
effect it should.
I removed ~/.openoffice.org2.0, and OpenOffice.org presented the new user
wizard. The initial style was set to "Automatic" and looked like Industrial.
(I use Gnome.) I set it to Crystal, the setting stayed Crystal, and it looked
like Crystal. Then, I set it to Automatic, it looked like Industrial, *but the
setting was still Crystal*. Then, I had the same kind of results for
HiContrast, Industrial, and Default (respectively).
Then, I set it to Crystal, closed the dialog, set it to Automatic (which looked
like Industrial), restarted OOo (which still looked Industrial), and the options
dialog had no text for icon style (until I clicked the drop down).
FWIW, when I choose automatic, the
.openoffice.org2/user/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office/Common.xcu file has
the following entry (and the value matches the schema). However, by default (as
a new user) the entry does not exist.
<prop oor:name="SymbolStyle" oor:type="xs:string">
<value>auto</value>
</prop>
So, there is no way for to use the UI so that the Options dialog to start with
the icon style option shown as "Automatic."
