please explain why this was turned down.

Personally, I find this highly useful to keep the graph manageable at higher
data point counts (some 1,000 points or so):
1) Individual data points can be clicked and inspected/manipulated. With that
many data points, it become difficult to select the right one.
2) Examining "suspicious" details of the graph (e.g. spikes, discontinuities) is
impossible without a magnification facility. Such an examination is important to
decide whether the suspicious feature is real, a display artifact, or something
that needs further scrutiny.
