Perhaps you use the wrong chart type? Make your "line"-chart with the type "xy
Chart".
The chart-modul will be redesigned. You find information about that work on
http://graphics.openoffice.org/chart/chart.html. But I don't know wether your
wish is already covered by that work.
I agree, that such features for the x-axis are useful, especially for
columns-chart. You would be able to use it for histogramms, distributions and
integrals.
