IMO the only way to catch this sorta thing is with instrumentation, bounchchecker ( is it still being used ? ) valgrind etc. tools are much better ( than us mere humans ) at spotting those small hard to find errors like the above that can cause the even harder to debug wild pointer misbehavior.
