Seems like cell merging data in biff5 and biff8 is the same. I will submit the patch these days after testing. BTW, there is another issue regarding biff5 import. 1C additionally uses MSO Drawing Objects to insert floating areas with text. In biff5 it is just OBJ (0x005D) and completely ignored by OOo import.
