This might not be considered a bug, but would be needed to be taken care of
sometime in the near future.
1. Start Writer and turn off the auto spell-checker.
2. Type a short text. e.g. How are you doing?
Be sure that no return key, a paragraph break, is included.
You can also use a sequence of three keys d t F3 to insert a dummy text
and then erase a paragraph break at the end by pressing a backspace key.
3. Select all by typing Ctrl+A.
4. Replace and paste it by typing Ctrl+V twice.
5. Repeat step 3 and 4 several times.
You would find soffice becomes too busy to work. A mouse pointer turns into
be a clock shape. soffice does not response. The Task Manager of Windows
indicates 100% CPU consumption.
However, with patient, soffice eventually becomes normal.
6. Go back to the top of the document.
7. Type some letters.
Now soffice works, but is working very slowly.
Asian versions of OpenOffice.org could be more serious and sensitive since
an internal word break iterator for Asian languages is more complex and costly
than that for Western ones.
I think the phenomenon described above has been known for years. It might
be a time to start to consider this issue.
>From a user's point of view, in most cases, she does not need to know the
amount of pages in her document currently being edited. So soffice might
not need to count up the number of pages upon every insertion or deletion
of a letter.
Additionally, she wants to see just one or two pages where she is modifying
or browsing, so soffice could concentrate on the specific area of the document
instead of entire document.
This is just an idea. If soffice has nothing to do, now it would be a time
to start counting up the number of pages in the document in the similar way
as a Java virtual machine starts to do a garbage collection.
