In your example file, cells aren't merged. I had to do it before testing what
you said.
When doing Data > Sort..., it give me a warning that I cannot sort merged cells.
To get rid of this warning, I have to uncheck the option 'Include format'. When
you use the sort buttons in the toolbar, this is like if that option was
unchecked. Your data aren't erased, but hidden. Unmerge the cells, and you will
see it.
To solve your problem, simply copy the values in each row before merging cells
(so the first column would be 'Car 3', 'Car 3', 'Car 3', 'Car 5', 'Car 5', 'Car
5', and so on), and then don't copy values to the first cell when doing the
merge. The sort command will work as you expected.
