My only idea is that some library needed isn't there and because epm is so
broken and does not do any dependency tracking you don't see it.

I build those stuff on a up-to-date Debian sarge. When I try to install them
on my suse 9.2 at work I get:

# rpm --force -ivh openofficeorg-*
error: Failed dependencies:
        libstdc++.so.6 is needed by openofficeorg-core03-1.9.79-0
        libstdc++.so.6 is needed by openofficeorg-core07-1.9.79-0
        libstdc++.so.6(GLIBCXX_3.4) is needed by openofficeorg-core07-1.9.79-0
        libbz2.so.1.0 is needed by openofficeorg-pyuno-1.9.79-0

Maybe Debian has some newer libraries the installset is linked against which
you (Sun) do not have? Then it is not my problem, *you* wanted *me* to build
and I did.

Regards,

Rene
