I believed it to be more like Ctrl-T in Lotus Notes, which you can use while typing. It will reset the character styles from the point on where it is pressed (and also works on selections). In Writer, Ctrl-Shift-Space sometimes seems to work that way, too (see the first instance in the original example), but not consistently so.
