There are more reasons for it - sort lists are defined with application scope and if a user want "MON" written this way he may have a good reason for it. Mon need not mean only Monday (Motor Octane Number, Mixed Oxides of Nitrogen etc.). By now the user has to delete the sort list which could be quity handy in other cases. Case correction is a spellchecker job and can be turn on if needed.
