2006 -------
The missing .note.GNU-stack sections in the glibc-2.2.4 startup objects are due
to the fact that there was no such thing at the time this glibc was released -
probably Summer 2001, our binaries are taken straight from SuSE 7.3 which was
released in Oct. 2001.
The NX bit functionality was enabled by default only with kernel 2.6.8 and AFAIK
works only on 64 bit CPUs, though also in 32 bit modus.
The PAX technology (emulates the NX bit if not present in hardware) is (as of
July 2006) not yet included in the Linux kernel.
I doubt that we can simply update the startup objects crti.o and crtn.o to newer
version without breaking our base line. I don't know if the mentioned ELF
section can be retrofitted to the 2.2.4 startup objects by some ugly ELF
hackery, this needs some evaluation.
If it's not possible to attach such sections to the existing base line startup
objects we are talking about a drastic move upwards of our base line, maybe to
SuSE 10 or something. Trying to recompile the old libc-2.2.4 with a new compiler
is probably hopeless. Recreating just the startup files with a newer
compiler/assembler (which?) might or might not work.
Set issue to type "Enhancement" since this isn't really a defect.
