I was thinking of users actually paying the license fee for byte hinting. For
those it would be really bad if OOo wouldn't be able to make use of it.

We got permissions to host the Solaris 8/GNOME freetype package for Solaris
8/CDE users.

The same thing as when any other system library gets a major upgrade - there
will be two versions present for quite some time. OTOH, if we want vanilla OOo
to use a newer version of libfreetype than the one installed on the system, this
would mean we have to keep it in CVS.

However, just doing nothing is *not* a solution: the way it currently is leads
to build and other problems frequently (see issue 37086 and issue 53880).
