I thought it worth reporting this bug because a friend reports having seen in a
1.x version a long time ago, and I could find no reference to it.

I installed Ubuntu Edgy, which includes OOo 2.0.4 running under Gnome 2.16.1. I
did not install any special language support. I did install other software, but
nothing that should affect either OOo or language support.

Upon launching any OOo component (I tried with Writer and Calc), the splash
screen is shown briefly, but then closes again without launching anything. It
made no difference whether I directly launched the applications or
double-clicked on an associated document file. No crash appears to occur, so I
don't have a backtrace. The application just doesn't launch after briefly
showing the splash screen.

I downloaded a brand new version of the install package to replace the one on
the Ubuntu install disk, and reinstalled OOo using that. The problem persisted.

I then uninstalled all language components.[1] This worked, and OOo components
open without a hitch. I then reinstalled the very same components using Ubuntu's
gnome-language-selector, but the problem did not reappear. It now works as
intended.

However, had I not known to uninstall and reinstall the language components, I
would probably have been stuck with AbiWord and Gnumeric (or Google Docs) so if
this is a common problem, it would seem to be a serious bug that presents a
barrier to adoption.

[1] Language packages uninstalled by synaptic were:
language-pack-en (1:6.10+20061019)
language-pack-en-base (1:6.10+20061019)
language-pack-gnome-en (1:6.10+20061019)
language-pack-gnome-en-base (1:6.10+20061019)
language-support-en (1:6.06+20060529)

Hope this rather vague info helps tracking down the problem. It should (in
theory) be replicable using a clean install of Edgy on an i686 box.
