Spreadsheet cells that contain zero-length strings (i.e., "") are apparently
turned into blank cells when an Excel spreadsheet is slightly edited and then
saved again as an XLS file (Excel 97/2000/XP format).

The application that I am working on relies on the fact that cells of type
string containing 0 characters and blank cells are distinguishable (which they
are, in the XLS file format). When editing a spreadsheet in OpenOffice, all
string cells that contain no characters are converted into cells of type blank,
which falsifies the information from the original spreadsheet.

I have been facing this problem with OpenOffice 1.1.4, for which this problem
already was reported as issue 50737. I upgraded to version 2.0.4, in which the
problem still persists, which the addition that now even the complete row gets
removed if all cells contained zero-length strings (which causes even more
trouble for my application at hand).

If anyone knows any ways to work around this problem, please let me know.

Thanks,
