There is a screen refresh bug in Writer. It can be reproduced by following 
steps:
1. Start Writer, reduce it's window so that page is wider than window, scroll 
document to the left (upper right part of the screenshot on attached "table-
select-step1.GIF").
2. Click Table, Insert, Table, leave all settings at default, OK. Be sure to 
close floating toolbar if it pops up (bug does not manifest itself if any 
toolbar is floating).
3. Click upper left cell of the table, then Table, Select, Table (as shown on 
attached "table-select-step2.GIF").
4. Observe distorted screen (like circled in red on attached "table-select-
step3.GIF").
