the afm files can be found at
ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/type/win/all/afmfiles/ ; in the subdirectories of
base17 the files are located with their 8.3 conforming filenames (e.g. the
Courier* files are c??___.afm). I cannot see any special license there, which
would make their general license for the files on their ftp server apply (see
ftp://ftp.adobe.com/license.txt ). However that one is basically a non-liability
clause plus some standard requirements and mentions only software, not data
files, so i'm not sure what license implications that has, IANAL.

As for printing without them: you cannot use printer builtin fonts then; these
are the metrics for the standard PostScript fonts, on cannot really produce
PostScript text without them.
