A fresh 2.1 download and a fresh install and the installation ran to completion on WinME without trouble this time. The program (writer) started up fine without problem (noticibly faster startup -- thanks OpenOffice.org!) I don't know what caused the problem before. The md5 checked okay on the first download. So, the issue is indeed resolved. (WORKSFORMETOO!)
