Ah, sometimes you just don't see the obvious:
-rw------- 1 root root 224 2006-07-26 07:46 /tmp/signalfile.txt
so somebody else on that machine created that file as root :-/
So forget about the parallel or multiple builds thing, but still the request to
use a file in the outputdir or one with a unique name holds true...
