2006 -------
I checked with "2.0.2 German version WIN XP: [680m5(Build9011)]" and a file in
a password protected diectory in the web, and I can not confirm that problem.

I created a testkit with a writer file that contains an OLE object which is
inserted by link to a password protected web folder.

Tests:

1. download attached 'writer.odt' to your harddisk
2. Open file
   expected: Password input dialogue should open, because a password is
             required to open ebedded 'calc.odt'
   actual: as expected
3. insert "testfiletester" as user name and password
   expected: 'writer.odt' should be opened, and it should contain 2
             identical CALC tables, one embedded and one inserted from
             <http://www.bielefeldundbuss.de/OOo_Testfiles/calc.ods>

Another Test:
10. Close and reopen OOo
11. Open OOo WRITER
12. change to OOo dialogues in "Tools - Options - OOo - General"
14. Menu "File - Open"
13. Insert "http://www.bielefeldundbuss.de/OOo_Testfiles/calc.ods"; as file
    name
    expected: you should be able to open file if you know UN and PW
    actual: as expected.
    This will only work with OOo file dialogue, with WIN file dialogue I
    get an error message "invalid file name"
    Test starting with step 1. will also work if WIN dialogues is checked.

@hatmon
It seems that that problem only appears if you try to open the file from a
password protected directory in your network, but my testkit also works for you?
