As a committed OO user, I would be happy to try the work around the next time I run into this issue. However, it is cruel to expect users to first open Calc and play with it when all they want to do is specify colors in a Writer document. Colors are extremely important in conforming to visual identity standards. OO has circumvented the problem for Sun internal use by defining Sun colors in the default template.
