I'd say this issue is invalid instead of worksforme, but I won't reopen it to
just change the resolutino since it doesn't really matter.
The problem you're observing ist most likely caused by a change your
distribution applied to their openoffice.org packages. (to allow formula input
not only starting with "=" but only with "+" or "-")
Apparently this patch isn't of the expected quality/doesn't work well in all
cases (like yours)
So please file a bug in your distribution's bug-tracking system. Since this is
not part of "vanilla" OOo, there's nothing we could do.
