In your case the page break is a property of the table. Therefore open property
dialog of the table, go to tab 'Text Flow' and uncheck 'Break'.
To insert a line before a table, which is at the beginning of the document, use
Alt+Enter.
The handling is not obvious, but as designed.
Concerning the crashes: Do you sent a crash report? If yes, please add the
number here. With no further information about the crash, the issue will be
closed. I don't get a crash with the attached document, I use OOo2.1 on WinXP.
