UTF-8 "happens" to work with most viewers when running in UTF-8 
locale (which is "usually" the default on Linux nowadays). 

Note the "happens" and "usually", i.e. I'm not sure either whether it 
is a good idea to rely on such accidents. Something unexpected might break ...
