Ok.

I couldn't even install FW 1.1 with antivirus on so I turned it off.

Then I installed FW 1.1 SP1 and then SP1 Hotfix something.

Then I turned it on again and tried an OOo install - no dice
Turned it off (antivirus) and tried an OOo install - it worked.

So it IS the antivirus that's giving access denied.

I would think it would be a good idea to mention this popping up a window or
something "in case install fails at the end, bla bla, turn off antivirus and try
again" or something like that.
