Not a defect, it´s the normal office behaviour while autosave is in progress.
The autosave-function starts when the preset time is reached. It saves all
currently opened documents, starting with the oldest changed document until it
comes to the latest changed one (normally the one, the user just works on) and
detects if the user is just working/typing on it or not. If not, autosave starts
saving this document. So this implementation is very save and avoids normally
the problem that the user types some characters while autosave interrupts him.
Because the autosave-function saves the currently active document too, it is
impossible to work with this document at this time.
But as you already mentioned, it´s hard to reproduce while working with the
office in a normal, usual way (ok, creating a document with 3.500 sheets and
many pictures will give the opportunity to reproduce it) and the user will hear
keyboard-beeps when trying to type characters while save is in progress.
