The network flooding bug has been fixed in upcoming OOo 2.2. However, this only
happens if OOo is unable to contact the update server, so providing valid proxy
settings (either in the Internet Explorer options or in OOo itself) solves the
issue as well.
To disable the update notification funtionality, de-select the corresponding
module in the custom setup during install (either manuall or by an MSI
transformation).
