I believe the migration path is the critical factor. It was first migrated from *.xls using an earlier M680 build, pre-1.69 as I recall, then used with successor developer builds. I haven't been able to duplicate the behavior by importing the same *.xls sheet into any recent version of OOo including the 1.79 beta candidate. I was able to overcome the problem for my purposes by importing the *.xls document into 1.79, making the few necessary corrections to formulas, and re-distributing the converted document.
