In another bug report I found a workaround that actually works!

Changing the character formatting of a word to "language: none" prevents its 
hyphenation. At least for short words (as in my test document) this is a 
usable workaround.

Anyway, the user shouldn't have to disable hyphenation for words with an 
apostrophe.
