There are some issues here:

1. Nowadays Xorg happens to provide an 8bit truecolor visual when running in 8
bit. Whoever had that braindead idea should be punished by having to work on
that visual forever after. In the generic plugin i built in not to use that
visual if there is a pseudocolor 8bit instead fixed in CWS vcl38. However when
running gtk we have no means to influence which visual gtk takes. Consequently
we look as bad as all other gtk application do, also. Since all gtk applications
do look so horrible on 8bit truecolor, i guess the user will not run OOo on that
visual either if he happens to use Gnome.

2. There are paint errors showing pixel garbage. Again, OOo is not the only
application to show that problem, e.g. jedit and gtk apps show the same problem.
Basically this is an Xserver bug and we cannot do anything about that, sorry.

Summarily we can only improve by not using 8 bit truecolor in the generic
plugin. This is now the case in CWS vcl38.
