1) automatical update.
There is no automatical update to allow the user to make some manual changes in
the TOC. If the TOC would update automatically:
a) every manual changes would be always removed
b) this would result in a huge performance problem (the TOC updating each time
you type something in the document.)
For this reasons -> update maually.
2) (I think you address here) the same style for text content and TOC content.
It is very unusual to have the same style for headings in the doc and in the TOC
(imagine readability of a TOC if each of your heading/chapter is 30pts size with
a blue paragraph border around!)
For this reason, text style and TOC styles are not linked together.
Feel free to modify the TOC styles to your needs or to map them with the doc
styles under "Insert - Indexes and Tables - Indexes and Tables - Styles"
Concerning *character styles*, see: issue 27377.
One more thing.
If you wish to report an issue here, always check that the problem is
reproducible in the vanilla OOo build (currently,
http://qa.openoffice.org/servlets/NewsItemView?newsItemID=478) and NOT only an
issue of the OOo build of your distro.
