I spotted it because the openofficeorg1979.msi file did not have the usual icon. Re-installing msi 2 corrected the problem and the setup runs fine now. Thanks for the help. I don't know if it is possible to detect a slightly corrupted msi2 install, and offer to reinstall it if that is the case.
