Once you repaired the symbolic link, please run the following command as root
user:
update-desktop-database -q /usr/share/applications
The point regarding the priority of this issue is that (up to now) you seem to
be the only one experiencing this problem. In fact, very little has changed in
the desktop integration area between 2.2.1 and 2.3, so the bug that hit you was
probably already in earlier versions, even though it did not hit you there.
The problem with the symbolic link is that it needs a RPM database query to
determine the link target, which (for older RPM versions) must not be done in
the RPM scripts because it will freeze the installation.
The desktop integration packages get around this by delaying the creation of the
symbolic link to the time when RPM already has finished it primary job. One
possible reason why this might fail is to shutdown the system immediately after
installing/updating OOo, but there may be more.
BTW: the readhat-menus package installs quite a lot of outdated stuff not needed
for FC 5, the freedesktop-menus package would be more appropriate.
@cloph: we once discussed making the freedesktop-menus package depend on the
ConcurrentAccess RPM feature to avoid the extra script, but I do not remember
the outcome anymore ..
