2007 -------
Since we don't use pure X fonts on the display anymore per default, the problem
does not occur anymore. Either all fonts are antialiased (on most systems) or
antialising is off wholesale (like e.g. on some 16bit displays without Xrender).
For this reason I consider this "works for me"
