all occurrences of printing only images, but no text were all caused by using an
HP or Brother printer attached as network printer.

In all cases known to me, mapping that network location to a local printer port
helped to solve the problem. 

My guess is that the printer drivers are just too buggy.

(net use lpt2: \\server\printer /persistent=yes)
