The impression that this is Windows-only was wrong. I'm still not able to
reproduce with Linux, but the issue is in the platform-independent code path. In
fact, the fix for issue 75264 broke this. Reworked, should now fix both issues.
@wg: please check that issue 75264 remains fixed.
