You can manage the representation by using a matrix
left lbrace matrix {x##y} right rbrace
size *2 {left lbrace matrix {x##y} right rbrace}
font sans size *2 {left lbrace matrix {x##y} right rbrace}
or if you have just one column than you can use the stack operator
