RESOLVED failed startup of OpenOffice.org packages!
Used Google search for "Need to know glStub environment variable" and discovered

Thanks RKASA for discovering 3D driver conflicts.
Problem packages are vmgl-dom0 [which was not installed] and vmgl-domU [which
was removed ].
Now the OOo-supplied version starts up with the graphical progress display. AND
opther applications which mysteriously failed to run, now run!
Including /usr/games/mahjongg3d
Happy camper here. Please spread the word about this non-OOo-specific conflict
with vmgl-dom0 and vmgl-domU and the mysterious glStub environmental variable.
